Child Care
Brief History of Child Care Advocacy
Until recently, discussions about the rocketing costs of child care were off-and-on and were arranged primarily through ad hoc student groups. Several years ago, for example, a few parents in EV had been a part of discussions with the Work Life Office.
Recent Advocacy Efforts
Recently, the GSC has begun a concerted effort to provide better child care options to graduate student parents. GSC members have presented their concerns to the Board of Directors and organized a meeting between the Provost and graduate parents to discuss child care concerns. GSC members also met with members of the Graduate Life Office and Work Life Office to assess what has been done in the past and possible solutions for child care concerns. Subsequent meetings with the Provost were held to move forward on ideas that came out of the student meeting.
Key Issues the GSC Plans to Address in 2004-2005
In the coming year, the GSC plans to follow up on its meetings with the Provost. The GSC also hopes to organize a group of graduate student parents that can provide their voices and support to illustrate the need for improved child care options.
