Stipends

Brief History of Advocacy

In years that the GSC advocates for higher minimum stipends, the percentage increase is generally higher. That is, unless the GSC asks for higher stipends, the University will not necessarily increase them.

Recent Advocacy Efforts

Steve Allison and Gayle Christensen met with top administrators during the fall and winter of 2003-2004 to discuss increasing graduate quality of life, a key component of which is the minimum stipend rate. This issue was raised explicitly in a September meeting with President Hennessy, an October meeting with Provost Etchemendy, and a December meeting with Vice Provost for Budget Tim Warner. Gayle and Steve also presented stipend data and a request for higher stipends to members of the Board of Trustees in November.

These efforts led to a minimum stipend increase of 6.4% to $17,541 from $16,485 for 3 quarters, which was announced in February 2004.
