Description: The Muslim Student Awareness Network and the Islamic Society at Stanford University annually bestow the Muslim Scholar and Entrepreneur Award upon a Muslim-American who has made substantial contributions to knowledge, society, or entrepreneurship. The winner of the Award is selected based on the magnitude of the impact of his or her contributions.
The selection process used to determine the winner of the Muslim Scholar and Entrepreneur Award is conducted by a committee of Stanford University students and a faculty advisory committee of Stanford University professors. The 2008 Faculty Advisory Committee consists of Professor Khalid Aziz, Professor Khalil Barhoum, Professor Joshua Cohen, Professor Amin Saberi, and Professor Behnam Tabrizi.

The winner of the 2008 Muslim Scholar and Entrepreneur Award is Dr. Nawal M. Nour for her contributions to science and society. Her research focuses on health and policy issues regarding female genital cutting (FGC). Dr. Nour is currently the director of the Obstetric Ambulatory Practice at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She is also an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Nour was honored as a 2003 MacArthur Foundation Fellow for creating the country's only center of its kind that focuses on both the physical and emotional needs of women who have had undergone FGC.

Keynote speakers for the event include Provost Etchemendy and Professor Anne Firth Murray. Dinner will also be served.

Dr. Ahmed Zewail was the winner of the 2007 Muslim Scholar and Entrepreneur Award. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for his study of chemical reactions using spectroscopy.
