Trying to contact graduate students can be tough if you don't know how. Here are some tips to get you started!
GSC Grad Events E-mail BulletinThe GSC requires that all groups who receive funding from it advertise on the weekly GSC Grad Events e-mail bulletin. Advertising is very easy. Simply fill out this form by 6 p.m. the Sunday one week before the event. The Grad Events Bulletin is compiled early Monday morning from all the submissions, then e-mailed to a huge voluntary e-mail distribution list. GSC Quarterly BulletinOnce each quarter, the GSC mails a bulletin to every single graduate students, containing items of interest to the graduate population. As part of this, each issue contains a calendar of upcoming events. Contact the Bulletin Coordinator for more information about how to have an event included in the bulletin. events.stanford.eduRun by the Office of University Communications, the Events at Stanford web site allows student groups to enter events into a database. Upcoming events are displayed on the web site. As word spreads, the Events at Stanford web site is being used by an increasing number of students and student groups. Graduate Residence E-mail ListsThe CA's distribute periodic newsletters to some on-campus graduate apartments. Given enough notice, event announcements can be placed in them. To find out the procedure for doing so, please contact the corresponding housing office:
In particular, the following residence electronic newsletters reach large numbers of grad students:
Graduate Residence FlyersThere are numerous bulletin boards located in Graduate Residences:
For more detailed descriptions of the bulletin board locations, as well as the locations of ones that might not be listed here, please contact the corresponding housing office (see above). Department FlyersMost departments have bulletin boards on which to place flyers; they also usually have mailboxes for their graduate students. Flyering these locations, either by going around to each department or contracting with the ASSU Ad Agency (e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) is another way to advertise events. Department E-mail ListsPretty much every department maintains an e-mail list (sometimes more than one) of its graduate students. The administrator who runs the list will post mailings that relate to that department to this list, so forwarding announcements of relevant events to these people is one way to get the word out about events. The Stanford DailyEntrance polls at GSC events have found that very few graduate students read advertisements in The Daily. Therefore, if you are trying to reach graduate students, it is a waste of money to advertise in the Daily. However, listing events in The Daily's "Once Around The Quad" (OATQ) column is free, so it can't hurt. Music at StanfordThe music department maintains an e-mail list for Stanford community members interested in attending musical events at Stanford. "Music at Stanford" comes out quarterly with a list of scheduled musical events. Weekly updates remind list members of upcoming musical events.
