GSC Statement Against Acts of Intolerance

The Graduate Student Council, as representative of the Stanford University graduate student body, condemns all acts of intolerance on campus. We believe that a hate-free environment is conducive to academic excellence and social responsibility, and we call on all members of the Stanford community to contribute to an environment of tolerance, respect of difference, and mutual care.

In keeping with these beliefs, we express our deep concern and regret over recent LGBT-targeted acts of intolerance at the Medical School. Posters for a seminar on treating LGBT patients were torn down, and cases displaying these posters were defaced with spray paint. Acts such as these create a climate of fear and intimidation that harms the safety and wellbeing of LGBT individuals. Yet acts of intolerance also undermine the University's commitment to diversity and thus hurt us all.

This statement conveys our support for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals on campus, as well as our broad support for all kinds of diversity. Please join us in this expression of support.
